The toy as a historical source: from poor, handmade materials to post-war plastic, amid fascist propaganda, television and comics. Pieces from private collections, archives and museums.
Paintings by Pietro Finelli recreate scenes from imaginary films inspired by classic Hollywood cinema and film noir, with works on gold grounds from the 1990s and more recent pieces; the gallery also screens classics of the genre.
About the museum
M9 is the 20th-century museum of Mestre, in the heart of the M9 district, a cultural quarter with exhibition spaces, event venues, restaurants and a service centre for businesses. The museum tells the story of Italy’s “short century” as a collective history, with its lights and shadows: totalitarianism, world wars and genocides, but also democracy, welfare, civil rights and widespread prosperity.
The permanent exhibition is highly multimedia. Its content was selected by more than forty experts and comes from a network of almost 150 Italian and international archives and libraries: photographs, newspapers, magazines, posters, advertisements, radio recordings, films and documentaries, amateur footage and television programmes. The installations feature more than 6,000 photographs, 820 videos, 500 printed items and 400 audio files, accompanied by about 10 hours of film.
Alongside the permanent exhibition, the M9 Orizzonti space hosts immersive experiences and in-depth looks at the challenges of the present, while the museum also presents temporary exhibitions, events and activities for schools and families, including the M9 Kids route.
