About the museum

The Sala Manzoniana is located in a space behind Villa Stampa, which belonged to the second wife of Alessandro Manzoni and to her son Stefano Stampa. It opened in 1979 thanks to the mayor of Lesa, Giuseppe Marenzi, with the collaboration of Casa Manzoni and the Centro Nazionale di Studi Manzoniani, to document the writer’s repeated stays in Lesa between 1839 and 1861.

The display was made possible by loans from Casa Manzoni and from the Rosminian Fathers of Stresa, who added memorabilia of Manzoni, Teresa Borri, Stefano Stampa and Antonio Rosmini to the Carcano bequest held by the municipality: private family papers, letters and documents of Giulio Carcano, poet, novelist, translator of Shakespeare, senator of the Kingdom and one of the first biographers of Manzoni.

In the mid-19th century the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore was home to a circle of intellectuals, among them Massimo d’Azeglio, Rosmini, Manzoni, Carcano and Ruggero Bonghi, a political and cultural point of reference; the hall holds books, documents and testimonies from that period of the Risorgimento. The curator Alberto Sormani enriched the route with loans of memorabilia from the Manzoni and Rosmini families, display cases on the publishing success of the “Promessi sposi” and a section dedicated to Carcano. After major restoration work, the hall reopened on 25 May 2024 and is part of the Manzoni Grand Tour.
