About the museum
The museum has been open to the public since June 1995 and grew out of sixty years of collecting by Mario Praz (Rome, 1896–1982), a scholar of English literature and critic of international standing. The house museum, a nineteenth-century noble residence, is furnished down to the smallest detail according to the taste of its creator.
The collection comprises over 1,200 objects: furniture, paintings, sculptures, carpets, drapes, chandeliers, bronzes, crystal, porcelain, miniatures, silverware and marble. Praz acquired them on the European antiques market, in France, Germany, England and Italy. The furnishings range from the Neoclassicism of the late 18th century to the Empire style, and on to the Biedermeier of the second half of the 19th century.
Visits take place in slots of about 45 minutes, with compulsory booking and groups of no more than twelve people. The museum is located in the Palazzo Primoli, which also houses the Museo napoleonico (Napoleonic Museum).
