About the museum
The museum opened in July 1995 in the monumental complex of San Salvatore in Lauro, in Rome, seat of the Pio Sodalizio dei Piceni, not far from Castel Sant’Angelo. Umberto Mastroianni donated 110 works to the Pio Sodalizio, with a first donation in 1993 and an expansion in 1995.
The collection comprises about a hundred works that trace the artist’s development from his figurative period to the 1990s: sculptures, drawings, bas-reliefs, tapestries and cartoons. The website presents it as the most important collection of Mastroianni’s work open to the public.
The same complex houses the Centro Studi dell’Opera di Umberto Mastroianni, presided over by the artist during his lifetime, and the publishing house Il Cigno GG Edizioni, which since 1996 has launched an intensive programme of exhibitions. The Musei di San Salvatore in Lauro also house the donation and permanent gallery of the sculptor Emilio Greco.
