About the museum
The museum belongs to the General Curia of the Camillians, the Ordine dei Ministri degli Infermi (Order of the Ministers of the Sick) founded by St Camillus de Lellis, and is attached to the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Campo Marzio, a masterpiece of Roman Baroque-Rococo.
The Sala Capitolare houses historical documents, manuscripts, paintings and religious objects produced by the Order over the centuries, including a canvas by Sebastiano Conca showing St Camillus tending the sick at the Colosseum and a wooden statue of the Virgin of the Michelangelo school, restored for the fourth centenary.
Personal objects of the saint are also on display: a wooden table crucifix, the cap of the Order, the bandages for the ulcer on his ankle, and the chalice and bowl used for the Eucharist. The Cubiculum, the former infirmary where Camillus died on 14 July 1614, houses the relic of his heart in a glass case by the artist Poli, the wooden support of the crucifix that comforted him, a bandage from his foot and two canvases by Matteo Toni from 1875 on his death.
