Museo Archeologico Nazionale Cerite

State museum in the Ruspoli castle in Cerveteri, with finds from the Etruscan necropoleis and the krater and kylix by Euphronios.

Opening hoursAdmission €13

About the museum

The museum, opened in 1967, is located in the historic centre of Cerveteri, in the castle of the Ruspoli family: a 13th-century fortress built of tufa, lava and brick, with several towers, a rectangular body and sections of the Etruscan walls of the 4th century BC.

The collections bring together finds from the necropoleis and the city of Cerveteri. On the ground floor are the grave goods of the Sorbo necropolis (9th–7th century BC), while the upper hall houses painted Greek vases of the 6th–4th centuries BC from funerary contexts, and Hellenistic sarcophagi. There are also materials from the Banditaccia and Monte Abatone necropoleis and from the excavations at the Civita.

The krater and kylix signed by Euphronios (the potter) and painted by Onesimos, recovered by the Carabinieri in the United States and returned to Italy in 2015, are among the best-known pieces. The route also includes multimedia stations, such as touch screens with narration by Piero Angela and the e-Archeo HI installation, in which visitors converse with Vel Apucu, a life-size Etruscan entrepreneur.
