About the museum

Pyrgi was the Etruscan port sanctuary of Caere, on the Tyrrhenian coast near today’s Santa Severa. The small Antiquarium, built in the area in front of the castle, holds extensive graphic and photographic documentation of the excavations of the sacred area, along with a selection of the material found there.

Visitors can see architectural fragments from the temple buildings and votive objects linked to the sanctuary’s cults, as well as a copy of the three famous inscribed gold plates: two in the Etruscan language, of different lengths, and one in Phoenician, which is a translation of the longer Etruscan plate. Found in 1964, the plates record that Thefarie Velianas, king of Caere, dedicated a statue and a place of worship to a goddess called Astarte in the Phoenician text and Uni in the Etruscan one; the third plate, with a shorter Etruscan text, also commemorates the establishment of the cult and its ritual.

The Antiquarium is part of the monumental complex of Santa Severa castle, which also includes the Museo del Mare e della Navigazione Antica and the Museo del Territorio. According to the manager of the complex, the Antiquarium and the Pyrgi excavations are currently closed to the public; the heritage authority organises extraordinary openings with guided tours.
