Museum of the city of Monselice in the former church of San Paolo, with collections from the Neolithic to the Roman period and an archaeological area with a crypt.
Exhibition featuring works by Andrea Minoja inspired by Dino Buzzati's story “Il segreto del bosco vecchio”, devoted to the relationship between humans and nature; accompanied by a performance and a raffle in support of a solidarity association.
As part of the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis, the exhibition presents a narrative nativity scene by Alberto Roveroni, along with works, medals and prints on the iconography of Monselice.
About the museum
The church of San Paolo stands in the centre of Monselice and is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the city. After the Second World War, in precarious conditions, it was still a place of worship; in 1956, with the construction of the new Duomo (cathedral), it was emptied of its altars and sold to the Municipality with the recommendation that it be used for cultural purposes. Used for a few years as an auditorium, it was abandoned because of poor acoustics.
The turning point came in 2000, when excavations coordinated by the Soprintendenza archeologica (archaeological heritage office) brought to light the early medieval structures of the church; between 2002 and 2008 further excavations made it possible to reconstruct the development of the urban settlement from prehistory to the early Middle Ages. In 2006 the building was restored and made fully accessible, with a lift, walkways and a goods hoist.
With funding from the GAL Patavino, the displays were renewed and the church became the Museo della Città, opened in 2017. The chronological and thematic arrangement tells the story of the area’s transformations; for the moment the spaces devoted to the history of Monselice from the Neolithic to the end of the Roman period are on display. A second route leads to the archaeological area above the excavations of the medieval church, as far as the crypt of San Savino, where the fresco of Saint Francis of Assisi from around the middle of the 13th century has returned to its original location.
