About the museum

The Museo Tripisciano houses the permanent exhibition of works by Michele Tripisciano, a sculptor born in Caltanissetta who lived in Rome between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and whose work interprets an idealised classicism. On his deathbed the artist gave his plaster casts to his native city; for years they were kept in the premises of the archaeological museum. The museum opened to the public in 2010.

The venue is Palazzo Moncada, also known as Bauffremont, a historic building from the first half of the 17th century in Largo Paolo Barile. Four rooms take their names from the most representative works and are arranged by theme; among them is the Sala del Belli, with preparatory sketches for the statue of Belli in Rome, and the Sala dell'Angelo, with the large plaster cast of the Angel with the Cross and other religious works.

71 works are on display, roughly half of the artist's entire output, including plaster casts, some marble works and bronzes; others are kept in storage. The collection preserves the preparatory work of a sculptor, a rare case in Italy.
