About the museum
The museum, opened in 1981 in Pietole, a locality traditionally identified as Virgil's birthplace, is owned by the municipality of Borgo Virgilio. Until 2025 it was called the Museo Virgiliano; the new name, after Ugo Celada da Virgilio, was chosen to highlight the collection of paintings by the local artist.
It houses two main collections. The modern art collection of Ugo Celada, born in Virgilio in 1895 and who lived to the age of one hundred, comprises 56 paintings. The Vincenzo Prati archaeological collection brings together cinerary urns and Roman-period coins found since 1873 on land owned by Prati himself.
A section is devoted to Virgil, with volumes of historical and literary interest and an educational route on the poet's works and life. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of local and national artists and keeps in its courtyard a sculpture donated to the municipality by the Mantuan painter and sculptor Sandro Negri.
