About the museum

Since 1856 the botanical garden has been located in the Valle di Sant'Agostino, within the ancient walls of Siena. It holds over 2,000 plant species, from Mediterranean plants to those of exotic countries, and is laid out in a nineteenth-century style alongside modern reconstructions of Tuscan habitats. The part that opens onto the valley retains the old farmland, with cultivations of Tuscan fruit and vegetables.

The route includes beds of native and exotic plants, a sector with 18 beds of medicinal and food plants, the fernery and the rock garden, ponds with aquatic plants, the smallholding (podere) and the wooded park, as well as historic greenhouses with orchids, carnivorous plants and succulents. A route dedicated to Darwin with ten information points was set up in 2022.

The Herbarium (Herbarium Universitatis Senensis) holds over 100,000 dried specimens and is accessible only to scholars, by reservation. The garden is run by the Sistema museale universitario senese (SIMUS) and is currently closed for works.
