About the museum
The Palazzina Cinese stands within the Favorita park and was built by King Ferdinand III of Bourbon in 1799 as his own residence, in the Oriental style, following the fashion of the time. The design is by the architect Venanzio Marvuglia; the building is a unique document of the encounter between neoclassicism and the Romantic appeal of the East in Palermo's architecture.
The building has a square plan and rises over three storeys; the central body ends with a pagoda roof supported by an octagonal drum. On the ground floor are porticoes with pointed arches, while at the sides there are turrets with openwork spiral staircases by Giuseppe Patricolo. Curious elements include the bells of the entrance gate and the carved wooden beams of the terraces.
In the basement are the ballroom and the audience hall; on the first floor, reached by an external staircase, the reception hall in Chinese style with painted fabric panels, the dining room with Marvuglia's ingenious “mathematical table” and the king's bedroom with its painted vault in Chinese style. On the second floor was the apartment of Queen Maria Carolina, while the top level houses a large octagonal terrace covered by a pagoda.
