About the museum
Palazzo Carignano was built at the wish of Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy-Carignano and designed by Guarino Guarini, who began construction in 1679. It is considered one of the masterpieces of 17th-century Italian architecture, with an undulating façade and an elegant cladding of worked brick. It stands on the site of the former stables of Prince Tommaso, founder of the Savoy-Carignano branch.
The building originally had a C-shaped plan open towards the gardens. The present quadrangular layout derives from the 19th-century extension made to house the Parlamento Italiano, completed in 1871 after the transfer of the capital to Rome. The central elliptical hall, conceived as a space for court festivities, became in 1848 the chamber of the Primo Parlamento Subalpino.
Today the palace houses two museums and the offices of the Residenze reali sabaude. On the ground floor the Appartamenti dei Principi di Carignano can be visited, opened in 2011, with gilded boiseries and vaults frescoed by Stefano Maria Legnani, known as Legnanino. The Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano is on the piano nobile.
