About the museum

The Pinacoteca was established in 1837 in the spaces of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Turin for educational purposes: the paintings of the Mossi di Morano collection and the cartoons donated by Charles Albert were to contribute to the artistic training of students. It occupies twelve rooms of the Accademia Albertina building.

The area was once occupied by the gardens, orchards and buildings of the convent of the Minims of San Francesco da Paola, whose church and convent were begun around 1632 with the support of Victor Amadeus I of Savoy and of Madama Reale Christine of France. After the Napoleonic suppressions of 1800 the convent was abandoned and the buildings took on new uses; from 1823 Giuseppe Maria Talucchi designed the monumental façade on Via Accademia Albertina and, around 1826–1828, the cylindrical Rotonda in the courtyard.

The Accademia, refounded in 1678 by Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours as the Accademia dei Pittori, Scultori e Architetti (Academy of Painters, Sculptors and Architects) on the model of the Académie Royale in Paris, received the buildings of the former convent as a gift from Charles Albert in 1833, bringing the art schools together in a single seat. During the Second World War bombings destroyed the roof and part of the Salone d'onore, which was later rebuilt.
