About the museum
The museum occupies the former Palazzo Miniscalchi, an example of late Gothic civil architecture unique in Verona, built in the mid-15th century to a design attributed to Angelo di Giovanni da Verona. Around 1580 the façade was frescoed by Michelangelo Aliprandi, while Tullio India the Elder decorated the lower register with a frieze of tendrils and putti. In 1880 the 15th-century building was profoundly altered by the construction of the neighbouring three-storey palazzo in classical style, which forms a large courtyard.
The Foundation was established on 30 April 1964 at the wish of the last heir, Count Mario Miniscalchi-Erizzo (1881–1957), who left the old palazzo, the adjoining villa and the historical-artistic collections so that they would be accessible to scholars and the public. After the death of his widow, Countess Anna Manca, in 1977, the restoration works began that were needed to transform the residence into a museum, which was inaugurated on 30 March 1990.
The oldest core of the collections comes from the domestic museum of Ludovico Moscardo (1611–1681), a Veronese collector and scholar, which passed to the Miniscalchi with the marriage of Marcantonio and Teresa Moscardo in 1785; other holdings come from the Erizzo and Pullè families. After the vestibule and the neoclassical staircase, fifteen rooms on the main floor present Renaissance bronzes and plaquettes, archaeological finds, weapons and armour, paintings, sacred art, Russian icons, 18th-century Venetian furniture, ivories, majolica, French porcelain of the Napoleonic period, the chapel, the old library and the reconstructed Wunderkammer of Moscardo.
