About the museum

The Galleria d'Arte Moderna of Verona was founded at the wish of Achille Forti, who left the city much of his property and his art collection as the basis of a civic museum devoted to the arts. Over time the holdings were enriched by legacies, donations from public bodies, banks and artists, and purchases by the Comune. Today it has about 1,700 works, from the early nineteenth century to the present day.

Forti's bequests set the directions for the growth of the collection: works from the local art scene, alongside pieces from the national scene, with particular attention to the Veneto and Verona region. The nineteenth-century core includes Francesco Hayez's “Meditazione” (1851) and a painting by Pompeo Marino Molmenti of Pia dei Tolomei (1853). These are followed by the Veronese group around Felice Casorati, who was in the city from 1911, and the twentieth-century acquisitions, including Mario Mafai's “I fiori” (1942) and two works by Medardo Rosso.

Among the main collections are the Dall'Oca Bianca bequest of 1941, with about 200 paintings and mixed-media works and over 290 photographs; the purchases made by the Cassa di Risparmio, with works by Birolli, de Pisis, Guttuso, Vedova and Tosi; and the Madinelli Veronesi bequest of 1986, with five paintings by Casorati.

Since 1987 the gallery has also built a collection of contemporary art of about 400 works. The first group of 18 works, acquired in 1997, included works by Cindy Sherman, Vanessa Beecroft, Fabrizio Plessi and Spencer Tunick. The holdings also include works by Louise Bourgeois, Jaume Plensa, Bill Viola and Sol LeWitt.
