About the museum
Palazzo Salis was built between 1630 and 1703 and for centuries was the residence of the Salis family, Grisons governors and podestà of Valtellina. The family, originally from the Como area and later spread through the Val Bregaglia, settled in Tirano with the Salis Zizers branch around the middle of the seventeenth century. The palace has always remained in the family's ownership, today that of the counts Sertoli Salis, and was restored to its splendour by works lasting twenty years.
The façade, in a late-sixteenth-century taste, is flanked by two towers and has a central Baroque portal designed after Vignola. A portico leads to the inner garden in the Italian style, among the most significant in Lombardy and the best known in Valtellina. It is also documented by an original plan of 1813, visible in the first room of the museum.
The museum route includes ten decorated and frescoed rooms, all restored, reached from the grand staircase and from the Salone d'onore, whose ceiling was frescoed in the eighteenth century. Among them are the Sala del soffitto ligneo (Room of the Wooden Ceiling), the Sala del soffitto policromo (Room of the Polychrome Ceiling), the Sala di Apollo e Aurora (Room of Apollo and Aurora), the Camera delle 8 Meraviglie (Room of the 8 Marvels) and the so-called Saloncello, a meeting place of Valtellina's political power in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The family's small Baroque chapel is also part of the visit. The rooms display drawings, portraits and documents on the history of the palace and the family.
