About the museum

The Parco delle Incisioni rupestri di Grosio e Grosotto was established in 1978 to protect and enhance the archaeological, architectural and landscape heritage of the Dosso dei Castelli, a hill above the village. The land and the medieval remains were donated by the marchioness Pallavicino Mossi Visconti Venosta, and management is entrusted to a foundation whose members include the Province of Sondrio, the Comunità Montana di Tirano and the municipalities of Grosio and Grosotto.

The heart of the park is the Rupe Magna, a large rock outcrop smoothed by glaciers, which bears over 5,000 engravings made over a period ranging from the 4th to the 1st millennium BC. On the hill there are also the Castello Vecchio di San Faustino, of early-medieval origin (10th–11th century), with its church, and the Castello Nuovo, built by the Visconti in the 14th century.

The Antiquarium, set up in the Ca' del Cap, presents the results of excavations on the Dosso dei Castelli and the Dosso Giroldo, where two protohistoric settlements arose between the 16th and the 1st century BC. The park works with the Soprintendenza archeologica per la ricerca e la tutela (archaeological heritage authority) and offers guided tours, educational routes and workshops for schools.
