About the museum
The site preserves a stretch of the original paving (basolato) of the ancient Via Latina, between today’s Via Appia and Via Tuscolana. The road was already used by the Etruscans and was laid out by the Romans around the 4th–3rd century BC to connect Rome with Capua. The park was established in 1879, after the State acquired the area.
The tombs date from the 1st and 2nd century AD and retain their painted decoration. The Sepolcro Barberini (2nd century AD) has two storeys above ground and an underground level with a frescoed vault on a red background and stucco. The Tomba dei Valeri (mid-2nd century AD) has richly decorated underground rooms with 35 stucco medallions, while the structure above ground is a hypothetical 19th-century reconstruction. The Tomba dei Pancrazi has underground rooms with mosaic floors, frescoes and stucco, and a large Greek marble sarcophagus in a chamber, protected by a modern structure that covers the original walls.
The park also contains the basilica of Santo Stefano, a rare early Christian complex from the mid-5th century, reachable from the road. From 22 June 2026 the site has been temporarily closed to the public for three restoration works, and no reopening date has been announced.
