About the museum
The gallery is housed in the Castello Gizzi, an 18th-century palace built from 1719 at the wish of the marchioness Smeralda Mazara di Sulmona, on older remains linked to the system of towers of the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. In 1967 the complex passed to the Gizzi family and, after extensive restoration, since 1979 it has housed the Istituto di Studi e Ricerche Casa di Dante in Abruzzo, founded to spread the work and thought of Dante.
The collection includes works of art linked to Dante's poem, received as donations or bequests after the exhibitions of the Museo Iconografico Dantesco. Among the artists represented are Sassu, Sughi, Crocetti, Purificato, Trubbiani, Guiotto, Tabusso and Tommasi Ferroni.
The castle also houses the Caldora library, a tower and a park of about eight hectares with a viewpoint over the valley.
