About the museum
The civic picture gallery was founded in 1868 by the Comune, with works received from the State. In 1905 it was inaugurated as the Galleria Pittorica in the rooms of the Palazzo dei Priori, on the initiative of the superintendent Corrado Ricci. Since 1982 it has been housed in the Palazzo Minucci-Solaini, in via dei Sarti, which opened on 21 July of that year.
Over time the collection has evolved from a picture gallery into a museum of the city, where sculptures, ceramics, medals, coins and other objects are displayed alongside the paintings.
The collection includes paintings by Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Candido, Priamo della Quercia, Taddeo di Bartolo and Luca Signorelli. The cornerstone from the outset has been Rosso Fiorentino's “Deposition”.
