About the museum
The archaeological areas of Volterra comprise two sites: the Roman theatre with baths at Vallebuona and the Etruscan acropolis in the Enrico Fiumi park, on the highest point of the city.
The Vallebuona area, on the northern slopes just outside the medieval walls, was not occupied in Etruscan times. In the Roman period a large monumental complex was built there, with a theatre constructed between 1 BC and AD 20 at the expense of two members of the Volterran Cecina family, and a thermal complex from the 3rd–4th centuries AD, of which low walls and some mosaics survive. The theatre fell out of use towards the end of the 3rd century, perhaps because of an earthquake. Excavations began in the 1950s thanks to the scholar Enrico Fiumi.
On the acropolis, continuous occupation is documented from the Middle Bronze Age. The visible buildings are two Hellenistic temples, Temple B from the late 3rd century BC and Temple A from the mid-2nd century BC, with cisterns, a paved road and a sacred enclosure; in the 13th century towers and houses were built here, which were abandoned after Volterra was conquered in 1472.
