About the museum
The Museo Diocesano d’Arte Sacra di Volterra is housed in the church of Sant’Agostino, in Piazza XX Settembre. The church was re-set up thanks to a bequest, and the museum was inaugurated on 30 June 2017. The church's original furnishings have been left unchanged; display cases and paintings from churches in the Volterra area have been added.
The display brings together mainly works from the cathedral of Volterra and from other town churches and the diocese: besides paintings, it includes liturgical objects such as reliquaries, furnishings and church furniture. On the high altar is the Pala di Villamagna by Rosso Fiorentino (1521), which depicts the Madonna enthroned with Saints John the Baptist and Bartholomew.
Other works include the Annunciation by Benvenuto di Giovanni (1466), the glazed terracotta bust of Saint Linus by Giovanni della Robbia (1521), the reliquary bust of Saint Ottaviano attributed to Antonio del Pollaiolo, the Madonna delle Grazie by Neri di Bicci (1451), the reliquary given by Pope Callixtus II to the bishop of Volterra in 1120, and an illuminated 14th-century book. Part of the route is in the area to the left of the altar.
