About the museum
The castle of Rodengo was built around 1140 by the lords of Rodank, on a hill overlooking the Rienza gorge at the entrance to the Val Pusteria, near the parish church of Rodengo. It was sold around 1300; in the 16th century it passed to the Wolkenstein family, the family of the poet Oswald von Wolkenstein, who renovated and extended it, making it one of the most imposing castles in Tyrol. The descendants of the Wolkensteins still own it, and part of the castle is still inhabited.
The complex preserves drawbridges, towers, walls and battlements, an evocative inner courtyard, the Zwinger, the armoury and the castle chapel dedicated to St Michael, which together give a complete picture of a medieval castle. Much of the furnishing of the exhibition rooms dates from the late Renaissance.
Rodengo's fame is linked to the fresco cycle with the saga of Ivano, taken from the courtly poem by Hartmann von Aue: eleven scenes painted between about 1200 and 1220, rediscovered in the 1970s in the old drinking stube. They are considered among the oldest examples of secular painting in the German-speaking area. The castle can only be visited on a guided tour.
