About the museum
The Museo della Torre Bianca is located in the bell tower of the parish church of San Michele, in the pedestrian historic centre of Bressanone, next to the cathedral (Duomo). The Gothic tower, 72 metres high, took on its present appearance in 1459 and is one of the town's symbols, alongside the two towers of the cathedral. Its name derives from its light-coloured masonry roof, which sets it apart on the urban skyline.
For centuries the tower had a dual function: parish bell tower and civic tower with a room for guards, still recognisable today by its four small bay windows (erker), and used until the 1930s (20th century). After restoration the tower was opened to visitors, and a small museum route spread over several floors has been set up inside.
The exhibition uses models to illustrate the significance of the tower as a civic and parish tower. It features miniature bells, the contents of the top sphere, tower clocks and information on the work of the tower guards. A carillon with over forty bells is also installed in the tower; its mechanism is reached by climbing several flights of stairs.
