About the museum
The Museo storico dell'internamento was inaugurated on 4 September 1955, at the end of the consecration ceremony of the temple, which has since been dedicated to the Unknown Internee (Internato Ignoto). The temple, described as the “second Altare della Patria” (second Altar of the Fatherland), holds the remains of the Unknown Internee, who was posthumously awarded the Medaglia d'Oro al Valor Militare (Gold Medal of Military Valour). The museum arose from the wish of former internees to preserve testimonies and pass on their memory.
The four small rooms are accessed from inside the church and hold documents, objects, photographs and testimonies on the experience of the Italian Military Internees: over six hundred thousand soldiers deported to German prisoner-of-war camps after the armistice of 8 September 1943 for refusing to join the Nazi-Fascist regime. The route also places this in its historical context, from the rise of totalitarianism to the Second World War, and recounts individual stories such as that of Don Giovanni Fortin.
The museum is run by the Federazione ANEI Padova and is recognised by the Veneto Region as a cultural institute. It is part of the Cittadella della Memoria, together with the Tempio and the nearby Giardino dei Giusti nel mondo, a symbolic space dedicated to those who opposed violence.
