About the museum
The Tumulo di Montefortini is located at Comeana, in the municipality of Carmignano, and forms part of the local archaeological park. The tumulus, about 12 metres high, was originally 3–5 metres taller and encloses two tombs of the Orientalising period.
The older tomb, a tholos tomb, occupies the central part of the mound and is dated to around 640–630 BC: it has a circular chamber more than 7 metres in diameter. Its grave goods were very rich and included a turquoise glass cup and numerous carved ivory objects. The tomb, excavated in the 1980s, has been open to the public since the works of 2005.
The second tomb, a rectangular-chamber tomb, was built some years later, perhaps after a collapse caused by an earthquake, between the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 6th century BC. Its grave goods have survived only in fragments because of ancient looting. Excavated from 1966, it has been open to visitors since then. The finds from both tombs are displayed at the Museo Archeologico di Artimino.
