Museo archeologico di Artimino

Archaeological museum in the village of Artimino, which tells the story of the Etruscan city and its territory through grave goods and settlement finds.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

The museum was founded in 1981 on the initiative of the Comune di Carmignano, in collaboration with the regional archaeological Soprintendenza (heritage authority), and opened to the public in 1983 in the cellars of the Villa Medicea “La Ferdinanda”. It presented the history of the Etruscan city of Artimino and its territory through finds from about fifty years of excavations.

To have larger exhibition spaces, in 2011 the museum moved to the village of Artimino, into a building that had previously housed wine vats, and it was inaugurated on 26 March 2011. In 2013 the Tuscany Region recognised it as a museum of regional importance; in 2017 the Region recognised Carmignano as a “Città di eccellenza della civiltà etrusca” (City of Excellence of Etruscan Civilisation).

The display is arranged over two floors according to a topographical and chronological criterion. On the upper floor, “Il mondo dei vivi” (The World of the Living), are displayed materials from the fortified site of Pietramarina, the settlements of Artimino and religious structures. On the lower floor, “Il mondo dei morti” (The World of the Dead), are the grave goods from Artimino, Prato Rosello, Grumolo, Grumaggio and the Comeana necropolis, with the Boschetti and Montefortini tumuli, and a reconstruction of a warrior's tomb.
