About the museum
Villa della Regina rose at the beginning of the 17th century on the hill of Turin as a vineyard residence of Prince Cardinal Maurizio di Savoia, son of Charles Emmanuel I, inspired by Roman villas. On the prince's death in 1657, his wife Ludovica expanded the complex and renewed the gardens, decorations and furnishings. In 1692 the property passed to Anna d'Orléans, consort of Victor Amadeus II, from whom it took the name Villa della Regina.
Under the direction of Filippo Juvarra and later of Giovanni Pietro Baroni di Tavigliano the spaces were rethought in dialogue with the garden; rooms and apartments were decorated by artists such as Giovan Battista Crosato, Corrado Giaquinto and Giuseppe Dallamano. After 1865 the complex was donated to the Istituto nazionale per le Figlie dei Militari, which from 1869 housed a school for war orphans.
Damaged by bombing during the Second World War and then abandoned, the villa was revived from 1994, when it was entrusted to the Soprintendenza per i Beni Artistici e Storici del Piemonte and restored. Today it can be visited with the apartments, the new permanent display A scuola a Villa della Regina and the gardens with views over Turin and the Alps.
