About the museum

The museum was established in 1978 by regional law by the Piedmont Region, which placed its seat in part of the former hospital on a loan for use. In 1980 the Region and the University of Turin signed an agreement, still in force, that allows the museum to use the natural sciences collections of the university museums.

The seat is the former Ospedale Maggiore di San Giovanni Battista e della Città di Torino, built at the end of the 17th century by Amedeo di Castellamonte and completed by other prominent architects. The complex covers about 22,000 m², of which 10,000 m² is exhibition space; at present about 2,000 m² is available.

In 2013 the museum closed to the public for structural consolidation and plant works, keeping its basic activities running; in January 2024 the Arca, the Museo Storico di Zoologia (Historical Zoology Museum) and the spaces for temporary exhibitions reopened. The collections include botany (about 85,000 items), entomology, mineralogy, petrography and geology, palaeontology and zoology, and a specialist library of about 19,000 volumes.
