About the museum
The Roman villa of Patti Marina was built at the beginning of the 4th century AD on the remains of an earlier residential complex, north of the hills on which the modern town stands. It was discovered in 1973 during works for the Messina–Palermo motorway, which damaged part of the northern side. It was a suburban residence along the route of the via Valeria.
The main nucleus is organised around a large quadrangular peristyle with a portico decorated by a polychrome panel mosaic, opening onto a central courtyard used as a garden. To the south lies a large three-apsed hall, the triclinium, whose mosaic floor emphasises the importance of the room. The villa also had a bath building, of which floors with suspensurae, a praefurnium, channels and basins can be seen.
Around the year 400 a strong earthquake destroyed the villa; in the Byzantine age, between the 6th and 7th centuries, the remains were partly reoccupied. Inside the archaeological area, the antiquarium displays, with ample educational material, finds from the excavations that document the different phases of occupation of the site. The villa forms part of the Parco archeologico di Tindari.
