About the museum
Tindari (Tyndaris) was founded in 396 BC and had a regular urban layout, with broad parallel streets (decumani) crossed by narrower ones (cardines). Today the archaeological area, on the headland above Patti, is run by the Parco archeologico di Tindari of the Sicilian Region.
The main public buildings of the city face onto the upper decumanus: the so-called Basilica, originally a kind of monumental gate, probably of the Augustan age and in use until the 5th century AD, and the theatre, with a capacity of about 3,000 spectators. The theatre was built between the late 4th and early 3rd century BC and was modified in Roman times to host circus games.
Insula IV is the only block that has been fully excavated. It spreads over four terraces, with workshops along the central decumanus, two houses with peristyles from the 2nd century BC, and a public bath building with rooms decorated with mosaic floors. The visit route is completed by an antiquarium holding finds from prehistoric to Roman times.
