About the museum
The villa began as a “maison rustique” which Napoleon bought in June 1814 to make into a summer residence during his exile on the island of Elba. The emperor never lived there, because he left the island before he could use it.
Later, Prince Anatolio Demidoff had the neoclassical gallery built and largely set aside the original idea of a Napoleonic museum. The rooms retain period furnishings, including the celebrated Egyptian Hall, and a small collection of nineteenth-century Napoleonic prints, largely kept in storage.
The park was redesigned by Adolfo Coppedè and has recently been restored, with several paths reopened. The villa forms part of the national museums of the Napoleonic residences of Elba, together with the Palazzina dei Mulini in Portoferraio.
