About the museum
The civic archaeological museum opened to the public in 1988 inside the Fortezza della Linguella, in the former Salt Warehouses (Magazzini del Sale) overlooking the bay of Portoferraio. The visit also includes the Roman villa of the Piazzale della Linguella, from which some of the exhibited finds come, and the Torre della Linguella.
The exhibition tells eleven centuries of the history of the island of Elba: from the 8th century BC, when the island was a crossroads of Etruscans, Punics and Greeks, with hoards of bronzes and amphorae for food and drink, through to the Roman period. On display are finds from the Etruscan hilltop fortresses of Procchio and Castiglione San Martino, dating between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, and materials recovered from shipwrecks.
Among the best-known pieces are the Montecristo wreck, with Graeco-Italic amphorae and black-glaze bowls, the Sant'Andrea wrecks and the finds from the Capoliveri necropolis, which document the export of wine, oil and cooking ware in Roman times. The museum is run by Cosimo de' Medici s.r.l., a company owned in part by the municipality of Portoferraio.
