About the museum
The Fortezze Medicee close off the ancient Cosmopoli to the west, the town founded by Cosimo de’ Medici at Portoferraio. It is a bastioned fortification with bastions at different heights, which descend towards the sea and form the so-called Fronte d’Attacco, an imposing architectural complex on the landward side of the town.
Together with the Forte Falcone, the Forte Stella and the Linguella, the fortresses formed one of the town’s main defensive strongholds. Over time they were progressively strengthened and served both as a military residence and as a lookout and observation point.
The entrance is at the end of Via Guerrazzi, the road known as the Porta a Terra because it leads to the second access to the Medici town. Today the route is a panoramic walk with benches, a refreshment point and play areas for children. The complex is managed by Cosimo de’ Medici srl, which also runs the Forte Falcone and the other cultural sites of Portoferraio, with which it shares the Cosmopoli Card.
