About the museum
Villa Necchi Campiglio stands in via Mozart, in one of Milan's most elegant districts. It was built between 1932 and 1935 by the architect Piero Portaluppi for a family of entrepreneurs from Pavia, the Necchi Campiglio. For its time the house offered very advanced solutions: a separate porter's lodge, a private swimming pool, a service tunnel, an internal lift and modern window frames, as well as furniture designed to measure by the architect. Ceppo stone, marble, parchment and burr wood, together with geometric decorative motifs, give the villa its unmistakable character.
On the ground floor are the large hall, the library, the salon, the veranda with conservatory, the smoking room and the dining room. In 1938 the architect Tomaso Buzzi was commissioned to revise some rooms, which were made to look older with neoclassical inserts, tapestries and aristocratic-style furnishings. Upstairs are the bedrooms, bathrooms lined with coloured marbles and two guest apartments.
The villa was donated to the FAI in 2001 by Gigina Necchi Campiglio and Nedda Necchi. It houses three art collections donated to the FAI at different times: the De' Micheli collection, with works from 18th-century Venetian art, the Claudia Gian Ferrari collection, with paintings and sculptures from the 20th century, and the Guido Sforni collection, with drawings by Modigliani, Picasso, Fontana and other masters. In 2026 the FAI also received the archive of Piero Portaluppi, which has a home in the attic spaces.
