About the museum
The Museo dei Cappuccini in Milan was founded in 2001 to preserve, protect and enhance the vast cultural heritage of the Friars Minor Capuchin of the Lombard Province, who have been present in Lombardy since 1535. The first group of works had already been moved to the provincial archive for reasons of better preservation and security, and because some convents had closed.
Opening the museum made it possible to conserve the works properly and to make the history of the Order known to the public. The museum presents the thought and work of the Capuchins and the cultural and religious context in which they operated, placing them within the history of Milan. Bequests and donations have enriched the collection over time. It includes paintings, sculptures, sacred furnishings and vestments from the 14th to the 18th century.
The route runs over three levels. On the ground floor are the rooms devoted to the Capuchins, to “I promessi sposi” (The Betrothed by Manzoni) and to the rhythm of convent life. On the first floor are the rooms on the Capuchin friars and on Franciscan and sacred iconography. On the second floor are the Rusconi collection and the section “L’arte di donare l’arte” (The Art of Giving Art). The museum also offers thematic routes, with works by artists such as Bernardo Strozzi, Guercino, Palma il Giovane and Mario Sironi.
