About the museum
The villa was commissioned by the brothers Marcantonio and Adriano Thiene in the 16th century. Andrea Palladio worked on it in the 1540s, at the start of his career, adapting a design attributed to Giulio Romano, whose role is not entirely clear. Giulio Romano died in Mantua in 1546, while the work was still in progress.
In 1547 Adriano Thiene left Vicenza and work seems to have stopped: the two planned courtyards were never completed. The villa also appears in Palladio’s The Four Books of Architecture (1570), in a version different from the one built. The front façade is probably closest to the architect’s intention, while the garden façade is attributed to Francesco Muttoni, of the 18th century.
Inside, 16th-century frescoes by Giovanni Demio with stories of Hercules survive. Since 1996 the villa has been part of the UNESCO site “The City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto”. Today it is the seat of the Municipality of Quinto Vicentino, which organises visits by appointment.
