About the museum
The museum is located in a gem of Art Nouveau architecture, in apartment 9 of the building at Alberta iela 12. From 1904 to 1915 one of the founders of Latvian professional fine art, Jānis Rozentāls, lived here with his partner, the Finnish singer Ellija Forsele. The writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis, Rozentāls's friend and like-minded person, also periodically lodged in the apartment as a subtenant; his last years of life were spent here, from 1906 to 1908.
The building was erected in 1903 to a design by the architects Konstantīns Pēkšēns and Eižens Laube and is one of the most important Art Nouveau monuments in Riga. Pēkšēns planned the apartment specifically for the Rozentāls family and built a painter's studio on the upper floor of the building according to the artist's plans.
The living room, the children's room and the bedrooms are open for viewing; in one of the bedrooms the wall paintings created by Rozentāls have been restored. The arrangement of the rooms is similar to how it was during the artist's lifetime, as a considerable part of the furniture and household objects has survived. The second floor holds a workshop with paintings and drawings by Rozentāls, as well as works by his pupils Oto Skulme, Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš and Jānis Sudmalis. In January 2025 a new exhibition room on Blaumanis was opened.
