About the museum
The Rīgas Jūgendstila centrs is located in the building at 12 Alberta iela, which the architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns built in 1903 as his own residence. The inclusion of Riga's historic centre in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 drew attention to the city's Art Nouveau architecture, and it was then that the idea of a museum devoted to this style arose. It was first proposed by Professor Jānis Krastiņš of Riga Technical University.
The museum was founded in 2008, and it is the only museum in the Baltic states devoted to the Art Nouveau cultural heritage. Visitors can see the interior of the architect Pēkšēns' apartment, as well as the exhibition floors.
The collection contains Art Nouveau objects made or used in Riga and Latvia in the early 20th century: furniture, interior objects, applied art, clothing and accessories, works of art and household items. Once a month the museum publishes the series “Muzeja lietu stāsti” (Stories of Museum Objects), which presents individual objects from the collection.
