About the museum
Krišjānis Barons, the collector and systematiser of Latvian folk songs – dainas – moved in 1919 from the Burtnieki house in Vecmīlgrāvis to a flat in house no. 3 on what was then Suvorova Street in Riga. After his wife’s death in the summer of 1914 he accepted the invitation of his daughter-in-law Līna to live together, and he spent the last years of his life with the family of his son, the doctor and professor at the University of Latvia Kārlis Barons.
The room of Barons attracts visitors’ attention: it is the setting in which the folklorist spent his last four years (1919–1923). A copy of the Dainu skapis (Dainas cabinet) is displayed here; the original holds the Latvian folk songs recorded in manuscript at the end of the 19th century.
The museum tells the story of the Barons family and of how the legacy of Krišjānis Barons and the Young Latvians lives on today. It hosts events, lectures and tours devoted to traditional culture, as well as folklore evenings on seasonal customs and other topics. The museum cooperates with various non-governmental organisations and offers lessons both for children with special needs and for pupils from national minority schools.
