About the museum
The museum is dedicated to two outstanding representatives of classical modernism in the history of Latvian art: Romans Suta (1896–1944) and Aleksandra Beļcova. Romans Suta was a versatile artist: he painted, made book illustrations, designed sets for theatre and film, ran his own art studio, wrote about art in the press, founded and managed the porcelain-painting workshop “Baltars”, and also designed furniture and interiors.
The idea for the museum was nurtured and developed by the artists’ daughter, the ballet dancer, art historian and television journalist Tatjana Suta (1923–2004). Throughout her life she carefully preserved and promoted her parents’ legacy and bequeathed it to the Latvijas Nacionālais mākslas muzejs (Latvian National Museum of Art).
The museum is housed in an artists’ memorial flat in a neoclassical building constructed in 1911 to a design by the architect Ernests Pole. The artists’ family lived here from 1935; during the Soviet period the flat was shared with other residents. In 1987 Tatjana Suta regained the whole flat and set up a carefully considered exhibition of her parents’ works in it. Today the exhibition tells the story of the artists’ creative work, their public life and their family.
