About the museum
The Latvijas Mākslinieku savienības muzejs (Latvian Artists' Union Museum) owns a unique collection of art from the second half of the 20th century, which the Art Fund of the Latvian SSR began to acquire in 1957. On the basis of this collection the museum was established on 27 September 2001. Its first director, the painter Sandra Krastiņa, created the exhibition on the second floor of the Mākslinieku nams (Artists' House) at 35 11. novembra krastmala.
Since 2014 the union's building and the museum's collection have formed a single museum complex. The collection comprises more than 17,000 items, and about 6,000 works of art have been granted the status of a national museum collection. The museum is accredited until 2027. The open storage has been publicly accessible since April 2004; sliding walls make it possible to display about 400 paintings and up to 150 works on paper at the same time.
Since 2011 the exhibitions have been expanded across all five floors of the Artists' House, and also to the creative quarter “Kombināts MĀKSLA” (Combine ART), to the building “Biķeri” and to Zvārtava Castle in Smiltene municipality. The exhibitions and open storage areas show sculpture, painting, graphics, ceramics, textile art, posters, jewellery and stage design, including works by artists such as Leo Svemps, Jānis Pauļuks, Gunārs Krollis, Lea Davidova-Medene and Rūdolfs Heimrāts.
