About the museum
The house at Vecpilsētas iela 13/15 was built in the 17th century as a residential building and warehouse, and was rebuilt several times. In the early 19th century its façade was in the Baroque style, but twenty years later it acquired the neoclassical outline seen today. The building was inhabited by the German-Baltic merchant family Kvērfeldi; in the 20th century it was rented out as flats and workshops, and later a design institute operated in it. In 1966 the house was included in the list of cultural monuments.
On 6 February 1989 the Council of Ministers of the Latvian SSR allocated the building to the Latvijas Tautas fronte (Popular Front of Latvia). In 1999 the Tautas frontes muzejs (Popular Front Museum) was opened here, and since 2015 the museum has been a branch of the Latvijas Nacionālais vēstures muzejs (Latvian National History Museum).
The exhibition “Atmoda–LTF–neatkarība” (Awakening – LTF – Independence) was created in 2013, marking the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Popular Front, and is devoted to the Third Awakening and the role of the Popular Front in restoring independence. It is spread over three floors, and with the help of modern design and technology visitors can feel the events of the time emotionally. In 2016 the exhibition was supplemented with a section on the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia (Latvijas Republikas Augstākā padome), where visitors can take part in a virtual vote and see material from the deputies' personal archives and the “Cheka telephone” installed by the VDK.
