About the museum
In 1795 Catherine II granted the Mežotne estate for lifelong use to Charlotte Margarethe von Lieven, and in 1797 it became the family estate of the Lievens. Construction of the palace began in 1798 under the direction of the architect J. G. Ā. Berlics, using Giacomo Quarenghi's design for Elea Palace (Elejas pils); the building was completed in 1802, while interior finishing work continued until 1817.
In the 1920 agrarian reform the Lievens lost their properties. In 1944 the palace was partly destroyed; its restoration lasted from 1959 to 1989, and in 2001 it was reconstructed. Since June 2025 the palace has again been open to visitors as a branch of the Rundāles pils muzejs.
