About the museum

The Muzeju krātuve (Museum Storage Facility) at Pulkas iela 8 is a building unique on a Baltic scale, with the highest security and storage requirements for museum objects. Around 31 thousand square metres of storage space hold more than two million items of the Nacionālā muzeja krājums (national museum collection): the collections of the Latvijas Nacionālais vēstures muzejs, the Latvijas Nacionālais mākslas muzejs, the Rakstniecības un mūzikas muzejs and the LKA Rīgas Kino muzejs.

Here the Latvijas Nacionālais mākslas muzejs shows two permanent exhibitions. “Skulptūru mežs. Antīkās un renesanses tēlniecības nolējumi” (Sculpture Forest. Casts of Antique and Renaissance Sculpture) brings together famous plaster copies of sculptures from ancient Greece, ancient Rome and the Renaissance, such as Myron's “Discobolus”, Praxiteles' “Hermes with the Infant Dionysus”, Verrocchio's “David” and Michelangelo's “Moses”. The collection is based on sculptures that the first director of the Rīgas pilsētas mākslas muzejs, Vilhelms Neimanis, ordered for the Kolonnu zāle (Colonnade Hall) at the beginning of the 20th century; works from the Latvijas Universitātes Mākslas kabinets and the Kurzemes provinces muzejs were added to them. The author of the exhibition concept is the sculptor Gļebs Panteļejevs.

The second exhibition, “Mītopoētiskās figūras” (Mythopoetic Figures), is outside the building at Pulkas iela 8: it features seven granite sculptures from the second half of the 20th century, created by Laimonis Blumbergs, Ojārs Feldbergs, Lilija Līce, Ojārs Siliņš, Juris Zihmanis and Zenta Zvāra. The outdoor exhibition is free of charge and available in daylight all year round.
