About the museum
The Raiņa un Aspazijas māja (House of Rainis and Aspazija) at Baznīcas iela 30 is a unique monument of 19th-century historic architecture in central Riga. A two-storey house on the street front, a farmhouse and a small inner courtyard form a cultural-historical ensemble. The poets lived in this house from 15 September 1926: Rainis until his death in 1929, and Aspazija until the spring of 1933.
The house preserves the memory of the poets' visible, public life – after returning from their 14-year absence in Switzerland, they were at the centre of Latvia's cultural and political life. In their 1926 will the poets expressed the wish that the house should remain with the city of Riga and that a museum named after them be set up in it.
Visitors can see the poets' memorial rooms, their library, and a hall in a separate building in the courtyard where changing exhibitions are shown. The flat has been restored and furnished according to photographs, documentary film frames, memoirs and diaries, using original objects from the collection of the Rakstniecības un mūzikas muzejs (Literature and Music Museum). One of the museum's highlights is the personal library of both poets, with 6,067 books in 14 languages and 2,900 units of periodicals.
