About the museum
The Adomo Galdiko muziejus is housed in a cultural heritage building in the Vilnius Old Town, on Arklių Street, in the former art library. The architect of the building was Vincentas Gorskis (1848–?). In the early 19th century the house belonged to state adviser Adomas de Štrungas; it was later bought by Elžbieta Bialozoraitė von Riomer, who had it rebuilt in 1880–1883 and in 1896 to Gorskis’s design. In Soviet times the building was devastated and remodelled; it later housed a children’s library and then the music and arts branch of the Vilnius City Central Library. In 2020–2021 the premises were renovated: stucco was restored, fragments of painting were uncovered and conserved, and stained-glass windows from the second half of the 20th century were preserved.
The museum was founded by the collector Arnas Jurskis, who had assembled the largest private collection of works by Adomas Galdikas (1893–1969); it opened in September 2021. It holds about 500 paintings and graphic works: portraits of women, still lifes, landscapes from the emigration period (Germany, France, USA), American abstraction, graphic works not yet exhibited, and studies. The collection includes the well-known “Portrait of the Jew Baruch” (1925–1926).
Visitors get to know the artist’s work not only by viewing the exhibition, but also during experiential tours (educational sessions) that use art therapy techniques. The display changes, and only part of the collection is shown at a time.
