About the museum
The Samuelio Bako muziejus on Naugarduko gatvė has operated since 2017 as a branch of the Vilniaus Gaono žydų istorijos muziejus (Vilnius Gaon Jewish History Museum). It is named after the Litvak painter Samuelis Bakas, born in Vilnius in 1933, who gave the museum a valuable collection of his works, based on paintings, lithographs, collages and drawings in ink, pencil and crayon.
The collection includes especially valuable early drawings that Bakas made as a child in the Vilnius ghetto in 1942–1943, on the blank pages of the chronicle (Pinkas) of the old Vilnius Jewish community. The painter, who survived the Holocaust as a child, is now a world-renowned artist; he works in the style of allegorical realism, full of symbols. The museum also tells the stories of Lithuanian Jewish children who were rescued, and holds temporary exhibitions, events, film screenings, lectures and book launches.
