About the museum
The Energetikos ir technikos muziejus, formerly called the Lietuvos energetikos muziejus (Lithuanian Energy Museum), is located in the building of Vilnius's first central power station. The power station started operating on 14 February 1903 and launched the modernisation of the Piromonto suburb and of the whole of Vilnius. The museum invited its first visitors on 14 February 2003, marking the centenary of the power station, but at that time it occupied only 13% of the former power station's premises.
In 2006 the museum signed an agreement for European Union Structural Funds support for a project whose aim was to convert the energy museum into a technology museum and to adapt the power station premises for cultural and tourism purposes. By the end of 2008 the building had been reconstructed, with the authentic power station equipment preserved, and the museum's area had grown from 800 to 5,000 sq m. A wind and solar power plant was installed on the roof of the building to demonstrate eco-friendly energy.
The museum combines authentic heritage with the interactive exhibitions typical of modern science museums. Visitors can see steam boilers, a turbo generator, the power station's control desk, a model of the city of Vilnius, and models of the Ignalina nuclear power plant and the Kruonis pumped-storage power plant. The newest space is the 1,000 sq m Virsmo salė, which houses two of the largest Tesla coils in the Baltic states. The ETM Vaikų stotelė (ETM Children's Stop) is for children, and there is a café terrace on the roof.
